Where does a museum go when it needs to take a vacation?
Does the artist’s work ever end?
Centre Pompidou is closed for holiday takes a humorous and critical look at the interactions between arts and leisure when the artist leaves the studio to explore the world. Thomas Mailaender is set to visit New York, see the sights, have fun, and make artwork of his time on holiday. Cultural trading within the international space of art fairs has evolved dramatically in the century since the original Armory Show. There is a curious irony within the use of a pier intended for cruise ships as a temporary yet internationally shared destination; taking this consideration as a point of departure, the all-inclusive aspirations of cultural institutions and luxury ocean liners alike are noticeable.
Bidding farewell on Sunday, March 7, visitors are welcomed to the Lower East Side scaffolding-clad space of the Fragmental Museum, to view the exploits of this adventure alongside recent and related works.
Multimedia artist Thomas Mailaender takes the traffic of both cultural and transportation vehicles as material; within territories of satire, monumentality, and entertainment. He is currently displaying work alongside Bas Jan Ader or Roman Signer in L’Equilibre et L’Accident (Equilibrium and Accident) as part of 7th International Biennal of photography (BIP 2010), as well as different shows in Malagua or Marseilles.
